String Player Horror!!!

What better way to get into the season of spook than with a cozy blanket, a bucket of buttery popcorn, and a ridiculous horror flick?
But how to find one that combines all your preferred interests? Werewolves AND cellos? Ghosts AND Paganini? Endpins AND murder????
Well worry no more! This month we’re setting aside the high-brow world of the workshop and have scrubbed the internet JUST FOR YOU to offer a smorgasbord of ridiculous frightful delight. Presenting….. the Denver Violins Halloween Flick Shortlist!
Paganini Horror

Starting out strong with this low-budget Italian banger of a non-classic. Deals with the devil? Check. Violin knives? Check. Inexcusably bad production value, spaghetti acting, and The Room-level costume design? Check, Check, CHECK. This one’s got it all, folks. Grab the fuzzy slippers and smash this one on the TV. CELLO

Moving on with a classic piece of mid-2000s Korean horror. “CELLO”: A talented cellist receives a mysterious cello that seems to carry a dark supernatural curse. As disturbing events unfold around her, she becomes increasingly convinced that the instrument is connected to a series of horrifying tragedies threatening her family and her life.
This one is actually pretty scary— if you like gore, disturbing turns of events, and psychological games, this one is for you!
Werewolf Serenade

Have you ever felt burnt out by academia? Has your research taken you in directions you were never expecting? If you’re like me and are more interested in camp than in creep, this is the one for you! While the cello is not as central a character in this flick as the instruments are in the two above, I think it still features promanently enough in this delightful movie to include in this list!
Wednesday

If you’re like me and learned everything about romance from Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia, you might be turned off by Wednesday’s more melodramatic teen drama vibes, but honestly, just wait it out for a few episodes, and I bet you’ll still get sucked right in.
It’s a dark academia take that pays homage to the many previous iterations of the Addams Family, and in THIS iteration, Wednesday plays cello!
Ghostbusters (1984)

If you haven’t already seen this one, I’m not judging you, but Zuul certainly is.
Watch Sigourney Weaver play Haydn’s 1st cello concerto, tote her Strad around in a soft case, and summon Gozer from the underworld.
Get slimed with this silly camp-tastic classic!
The Witches of Eastwick

Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer and Cher… need I say more? Ok I will… Jack Nicholson.
This one is perfect for the 80s and 90s kids looking for a cozy throwback to campy Halloween fun. Three fabulous witches, peak Nicholson cheese… it’s the slightly darker more outrageous cousin of Hocus Pocus for grown ups.
