Mathias Albani I (or Matthias Alban) was a prominent violin maker born in San Nicolò di Caldaro in 1634 and active in Bolzano, Tyrol, until his death in 1712. He served his apprenticeship in Rome, working for Martino Arz and Andrea Portoghesi, before returning to Bolzano after 1670. His style is considered Italianate, inspired by the Amati family and Jacobus Stainer. Albani’s instruments are noted for their refined style, delicate detail, and a recognizable intense dark red varnish. His work significantly influenced luthiers in the Tyrol region.
