A Cello Bow by the Dodd Family with a rare "FENDT" stamp

London, ca. 1800

Ebony and silver fittings; frog by Evan Orman; adjuster by L Panormo; stick has an original graft from the maker

$12,000

When we acquired a beautiful cello by Bernard Simon Fendt a few years ago (currently available at Denver Violins), Evan took a trip to the UK to pick it up and visit with his friend Tim Baker. Tim, a leading world expert on British bows, pointed out that he had one of the very few examples of a bow barring the FENDT stamp and suggested that it would be a shame if it was not offered as an outfit with this cello. Since the bow had an original ivory frog, Evan quickly set out to make an ebony replica during his stay.

This beautiful bow is from the Dodd workshop, and was probably made by John Dodd’s sons, James I and Edward II. It has an original graft in the stick, showing a great amount of economy and resourcefulness. The original frog is offered with the bow but will need to be exported from the UK with a valid permit.
